The birth of Ava DuVernay was on August 24 1972 in Long Beach California. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise encouraged her passion for art and creativity. The aunt worked as an overnight nurse so that she could have the chance to learn about art literature or theater. DuVernay was a fan of the movie West Side Story, which she showed her. DuVernay discovered by watching her mother's examples of how art could serve as an activist vehicle. DuVernay grew up with her mother who was aware of her social circle and taught her to use art as a method of expression. DuVernay was brought up in Compton with her parents however she was able to spend the summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is where DuVernay's father's family has lived for many generations. The father of DuVernay's remembered watching the historic Civil Rights march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. The DuVernay family visited Selma over the summers and was later inspired to create a film on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. After graduation she was enrolled at an institution called the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with qualifications in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay was a college student when she became interested in production for broadcast journalism. DuVernay was an intern at CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was appointed to watch and search the home for a specific juror. The duties she was required to accomplish left her unsatisfied which is why, when she decided not to continue in journalism, she shifted to the field of public relations. DuVernay began her professional career as a junior public relations assistant in a tiny film studio, right after graduating from the college. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her public relations firm in 1999. She also started several lifestyles and promotional networks, including Urban Beauty Collective.
