Thompson was born in Rochester, Minnesota on May 31st, 1961. Thompson is one of five kids of Clifford Thompson and Barbara Barry Thompson and Barbara Barry Thompson. She is the sister of Coleen Goodrich, Shannon Katona and Barry Katona. Her mother is from Ireland. Mikhail Baryshnikov , at the time, was when the director of artistic. He said to her "You are an amazing dancer however your body is bulky." She described the incident as "my epiphany" that led her to quit dancing and become an ballet dancer.
